Frequently Asked Questions
Custom Foot Orthotics
What are custom foot orthotics?
Custom foot orthotics are specially crafted shoe inserts designed to support & correct your unique foot structure, gait, and biomechanics. They differ from off-the-shelf insoles because they’re individually manufactured from detailed foot casting impressions taken during an assessment.
What is the process of getting custom foot orthotics at KW Orthotics & Bracing?
Assessment:
Our Certified Pedorthist completes a 45-minute evaluation, including gait analysis, biomechanical and postural assessment.
Casting:
If orthotics are indicated, a 3-dimensional cast is taken of your feet using plaster or foam to accurately capture foot shape.
Manufacturing:
Orthotics are made on-site in the orthotic lab by your provider, tailored specifically to you.
Follow-up:
Adjustments are included for up to 3 years after dispensing.
What conditions can custom orthotics help with?
Custom orthotics aim to support, realign, and reduce stress on affected structures.
Custom orthotics can help manage many foot and lower-body conditions, including but not limited to:
• Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
• Metatarsalgia (ball-of-foot pain)
• Morton's neuroma
• Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction
• Achilles tendinopathy
• Bunions & osteoarthritis
• In-toeing and gait issues
• Ankle instability
What are the benefits of custom foot orthotics?
Custom orthotics can:
- Reduce pain by redistributing pressure and improving alignment in feet, knees, hips, and back.
- Improve posture, gait, and balance.
- Help prevent injury by supporting proper foot mechanics.
- Increase comfort during walking, standing, and athletic activity.
How are custom orthotics different from regular insoles?
Custom orthotics are based on a detailed assessmen including a biomechanical evaluation and gait analysis.
The design of a custom othotic is tailored to each patient's foot posture and movement.
Custom foot orthotics are also made from a casting of your feet ensuring the contour matches your foot exactly.
Custom orthotic design may be more rigid that regular insoles or have specialized cushion depending on individual needs.
What if my orthotics feel uncomfortable?
Some initial soreness can be normal as your feet adjust. However, severe discomfort, pain, or rubbing isn’t expected.
We offer check-ups and adjustments on all of our orthotics for a three year period.
Are custom orthotics covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by plan and provider. Many extended health plans cover part or all of the cost, but requirements (like a prescription) differ.
Always check with your insurance provider before booking.
Do I need special shoes for orthotics?
You should wear orthotics in shoes with sufficient depth and structure to hold them securely. Athletic shoes, walking shoes, and many daily wear shoes with removable insoles work best.
How long do custom orthotics last?
Durability varies by materials and usage, but custom orthotics often last multiple years. We find about 3 years is average.
Some may last up to 5 years or longer with proper care.
How long does it take to get used to orthotics?
Some initial adjustment is normal. Like breaking in a new pair of shoes, your body may take time to adapt. Gradually increasing wear time over 1–2 weeks is often recommended.
If discomfort persists more than 10 days we recommend having a check-up to evaluate the cause of the discomfort.
Custom Knee Bracing
What should I do if my knee brace doesn’t feel comfortable?
Some initial adjustment is expected while getting used to a custom brace. However, if you experience significant discomfort, rubbing, or pain, we recommend booking a check-up so we can ensure fit and proper use of the brace.
What is a custom knee brace?
A custom knee brace is a personalized support device that is specifically measured and fitted to your knee. Unlike off-the-shelf braces, custom braces are adjusted to your exact anatomy and unique needs, providing improved comfort, fit, and function.
Why choose a custom knee brace instead of an off-the-shelf brace?
Custom knee braces are tailored to your leg shape, condition, and lifestyle. They can provide better stabilization, alignment, and support—especially for moderate-to-severe conditions like ligament tears or significant osteoarthritis—than generic braces. Professional assessment ensures the brace matches your functional and biomechanical needs.
What conditions can custom knee bracing help with?
Custom knee braces can help with a variety of issues, including:
- Osteoarthritis(to unload pressure and reduce pain)
- Ligament injuriessuch as ACL, PCL, MCL, and LCL instabilities
- Meniscal injury or post-surgical recovery
- Knee instability or weakness
- Other situations where greater support or joint protection is needed
What happens during a custom knee bracing consultation?
At your consultation, the clinician will:
- Discuss your knee condition, pain, and activity goals
- Review which brace options are appropriate for your needs
- Measure your knee and leg to ensure a precise fit
How long does it take to get a custom knee brace?
The timeline depends on the specific device and manufacturing process. Custom braces often require detailed measurements and may be ordered from specialized manufacturers. Braces are typically ready within 2 weeks.
Can I wear my custom knee brace for everyday activities?
Yes — but how often and during which activities you wear it depends on your condition and the type of brace prescribed. Your clinician will advise you on safe wear times, proper use during physical activities, and whether you should remove it during rest.
Will my insurance cover a custom knee brace?
Coverage varies by plan and provider. Many extended health insurance plans may cover part or all of the cost of custom bracing.
Typically a prescription from your Family Physician or Surgeon is required.
We can provide you with an estimate for a custom knee brace prior to ordering to ensure coverage.
Compression Socks
What are compression socks?
Compression socks are specially designed socks that apply controlled pressure to your legs and lower limbs. This pressure helps improve blood circulation, reduce swelling, and support vein function. Medically graded compression socks exert graduated pressure that’s strongest at the ankle and gradually decreases up the leg.
What is the process to get compression socks?
Our Canadian Certified Pedorthist offers compression consultations. During the consultation we discuss the need for compression, what activities they will be used for and measurements are taken of your legs. We then discuss the different length, material and colour options available.
What are compression socks used for?
Many people also wear them during travel, work shifts that involve lots of standing or walking, or daily activities where circulation support is beneficial.
Compression socks can be used to:
- Enhance blood flow in the legs and ankles.
- Reduce swelling and leg discomfort associated with standing or sitting for extended periods.
- Help prevent venous conditions such as varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
- Support recovery after surgery or injury.
- Aid athletes by reducing fatigue and possibly improving recovery.
How do compression socks work?
Compression socks apply gradually decreasing pressure from the ankle upwards. This gradient:
- Helps blood flow back toward the heart against gravity.
- Reduces blood and fluid pooling in the lower legs.
- Supports vein valves so they function more efficiently.
Are compression socks covered by insurance?
Typically insurance covers medical-grade compression socks if they are prescribed by your Family Physician. Coverage varies by plan and provider. We are able to offer estimates for products prior to purchase for a pre-determination.
